What is Herbal Medicine?
When nature produces symptoms as a warning that a condition in your body needs correcting, herbal medicines work with nature, assisting you with its healing effects by supplying the essential elements for an effective recovery. Herbal medicine made from plants is the oldest and still the most widely used system of medicine in the world today, common to all societies and cultures
The Greek physician, Dioscorides, in the first century A.D., applied the knowledge gained about the properties of plants useful to man and his Materia Medica is still referred to as one of the most accurate and learned in the practice of natural medicine today.
Drugs and in-organic medicines often suppress chronic disease manifestations which frequently reappear at a later time in other more serious forms with most drugs having some adverse side effects which often accumulate causing further health problems.
But without a doubt, in the case of serious disease and accidents, drugs can be life saving.
Pharmaceutical drugs work by changing the biochemical pathways in your body. Herbal medicine does this as well but also helps your body to heal. For example, many of the herbs we use for stress not only help you deal with your current stress but also help strengthen your adrenal glands so that you are better able to deal with future stresses. Using plants as medicine allows their complex nature to not only treat the symptoms of ill-health but address the underlying causes of the condition.

Echinacea Proves Effective Against Respiratory Bacteria
Echinacea is occasionally branded as only good to stop you getting a cold and not effective when you do get a cold. The main symptoms we get with upper respiratory infections (sore throat, cough) are usually caused by bacteria, sometimes secondary to an initial viral infection.
This recent Canadian study has shown that Echinacea is not only effective during a cold, it's also shown us how it works. Echinacea inactivated the bacterial strains studied and completely reversed the cellular inflammation. In other words, Echinacea exerts a dual effect against several important respiratory bacteria, producing a killing effect and an anti-inflammatory effect.
